Tragic Accident Claims Life of Chesterfield Resident, Causes Closure on I-75 at I-696
2 Separate Accidents Involving 3 Vehicles
In a devastating turn of events, a fatal accident occurred on Thursday morning, leading to the closure of the I-75 at I-696 interchange for several hours. According to Michigan State Police, the incident involved two separate crashes, resulting in one casualty and injuries to two others.
Multiple vehicles were involved in the accident, with reports of extensive damage along the freeway, near 8 Mile Rd. The first crash, transpiring around 5:45 a.m., involved a 37-year-old Oak Park resident driving a Chevy SUV. Police investigations suggest that excessive speed led to the loss of control, causing the SUV to slide across all lanes and collide with a bridge support before halting in the right lane. Fortunately, the SUV driver sustained minor injuries.
A Second Crash Ends in a Fatality
Tragically, a second crash occurred in the same vicinity. A 26-year-old resident of Chesterfield Township was behind the wheel of a Chevy Cruze when, allegedly, speed caused him to lose control as well. The Cruze collided with the bridge support and came to a stop in the left lane, where it was subsequently struck by a Dodge Avenger. Regrettably, the driver of the Cruze succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash, while the Avenger driver suffered minor injuries.
Out of respect for the deceased and their family, the identity of the individual has been withheld pending notification. Michigan State Police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident with their crash reconstruction section.
