Fatal Motorcycle Crash on I-96 Highlights Need for Caution in Early Riding Season
Michigan State Police Emphasize Speed Caution as Warm Weather Spurs Early Motorcycle Season
DETROIT — Tragedy struck Tuesday night on Interstate 96 in Detroit as a multi-vehicle car crash claimed the life of a young man on a motorcycle and left another injured, according to Michigan State Police.
Reports indicate that the incident unfolded around 8:55 p.m. in the eastbound lanes near Scotten Street when a 23-year-old man from Farmington Hills was riding a motorcycle at a high speed, ultimately rear-ending a Ford Fusion.
The impact of the collision ejected the motorcyclist from his bike, while the Fusion driver lost control, striking an embankment and rolling over on the freeway, as detailed by Michigan State Police.
Shortly after, a Chevy Bolt collided with the overturned Fusion, also rolling multiple times, according to the police report.
Farmington Hills Man, 23 Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash
Tragically, the motorcycle rider succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the driver of the Bolt sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, with expectations of recovery, according to Michigan State Police. Thankfully, no other injuries were reported from the crash.
In the wake of this devastating incident, First Lt. Mike Shaw emphasized the critical importance of vigilance on the roads, particularly for motorcyclists gearing up for the warmer weather.
“Excessive speed is a leading cause of fatal traffic crashes across the state,” said Lt. Shaw. “This risky driving behavior is even worse on a motorcycle. As the riding season approaches, we are urging motorcycle drivers to slow down and drive safely.”
As temperatures rise earlier than usual this year, it’s imperative for both motorcyclists to exercise caution regarding their speed and for all drivers to remain vigilant and aware of motorcycles sharing the roadways.
